The running costs on the little BMW are a touch high for now. She’s a good little car but just on the edge where someone might see her as rough enough to run into the ground. So I’m going to SORN her (basically telling the government it won’t be used on the road) and perform a mild budget restoration.

Ordered two new front wings and an indicator for £60 and had some matched paint mixed for another £60. Thats the major cosmetics fixed for £120. Then the only mechanical faults are a rotten exhaust mount (10 minutes with the welder will sort that) and a power steering leak. Fairly sure I’ve narrowed that down to a hose so I’ll just replace it. Worst case I’ll rebuild the rack with new seals. Then I need one small interior trim piece and itll look stock and fairly clean. I think for 600-700 all in I can have a nice, clean 90s tastic little RWD hatch. It doesn’t make huge financial sense (these aren’t worth all that much) but I really want a fun project to spend my spare time on.

So....I’m not up on UK vehicle regs, but if you SORN it, does that mean you can’t drive it legally on the highways? Are you going to un-SORN it later?

Means it cant be on public roads at all. Keeping it on the driveway since while its sorn they can clamp it if you so much as park it outside your house on the road. To cancel the sorn you just tax it, so ill tax it once im in the position where i can put insurance on it.

Gotcha! :) Wasn’t sure if you could “unSORN” something once it had been done, so glad to hear that! :P
